All are disbelieved and form a cohesive group via the Internet
a skywatcher notices a large number of meteors which hit over Walker Co.....use a pseudonym....
the dust of the ground infects animals which in turn infect humans
At a certain time in 2012 an epidemic breaks out.....respiratory? The fibers begin to envelop the bodies they inhabit.....but they are covered up when found.....government conspiracy and cover-up.....
The bodies begin to change......
The epidemic worsens....
With a nod to Outbreak and the Idiot's guide, it is tied to an experiment unleashed by genetic engineering to increase agricultural production.....
oh and even though it is tied to the agricultural bacteria, it is extraterrestrial in origin.....and in intent ;)
